Former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov has warned that Ruben Amorim could quickly lose patience with his striker options of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Consistently scoring goals has proven to be an extremely difficult task for United this season, with many of their forwards misfiring. Hojlund has managed just four Premier League goals in 29 appearances, while Zirkzee has found the back of the net just three times in 32 top-flight games.
Hojlund, in particular, has struggled, failing to fulfil his role as the focal point of United’s attack. His performances have consistently frustrated fans, and there are growing speculations that his time at the club could be coming to an end ahead of the summer transfer window.
Zirkzee on the other hand, has shown much greater promise in an attacking midfield role and it appears that’s where his long-term future lies.
United are believed to be eyeing striker reinforcements, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres and Liam Delap all mentioned to be on their radar.
Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Berbatov insisted that Amorim could lose his patience with the likes of Hojlund and Zirkzee if they fail to come good.
Asked about the high quality of forwards that United boasted of in their prime, Berbatov modestly answered, “Well, different time, different football, different players.”
“United have been going through a difficult period in the Premier League, and especially even more so now that Liverpool have won the 20th title, which obviously is a big disappointment for everybody connected to United.”
The Bulgarian added, “As for their striker dilemma, that will stay until either the current strikers start scoring goals regularly, or the new season comes and the manager decides his patience is no longer there with them, and maybe he’ll go for someone else.”
“Until the season finishes, I hope that whoever is given the chance to play up front can take this chance really seriously, because they need to know that when the new season comes, everything starts anew, the manager will have more time to prepare the team from the beginning.”
“Then it’s going to be either you produce or you’re not playing, or worse – you’re going to be sold.”
United are back in action on Thursday when they face Athletic Club in the return leg of their Europa League semi-final tie.
