According to Globo.com, Fernando Diniz defended his animated reprimand during Vasco’s Brasileirão opener against Mirassol on Thursday, saying his demands come from care after Monday’s draw with Madureira.
Inside the club his firm stance is seen as constructive. His presence helped secure Brenner, Alan Saldivia and Marino Hinestroza in this window.
Rayan stands out. The academy forward, promoted in 2023 and criticised at times in 2024, flourished under Diniz with 20 goals last season, then joined Bournemouth in the biggest sale in Vasco’s history.
Nuno Moreira rose from near obscurity to a key role, delivering a career-best first season with 11 goals and seven assists, surpassing previous marks of nine and five.
For Paulo Henrique, it has been mixed. A depth signing who became a standout in 2025 and earned a national-team call, he dipped late last year, struggled in the Copa do Brasil final and has played little in 2026.
Not every case is positive.
Matheus França, on loan from Crystal Palace since mid-2025, has yet to convince, with no direct goal involvement in more than 20 games. He went unused even during rotation in the Campeonato Carioca, and the board expects a response by July, when his deal ends.
Left-back Lucas Piton, a flagship signing since Vasco became an SAF, is known for his crossing but has dipped since mid-2025. At times right-back Puma Rodríguez has been steadier on his side, and Piton’s 2026 form is below par.
