Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot issued a clarion call after he and his teammates beat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday, to register the club’s first win at Anfield since 2016.

United sink Liverpool

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for United early into proceedings. He timed his run perfectly to meet Amad’s exquisite pass, finishing clinically beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Cody Gakpo made it 1-1 in the 78th minute to threaten a dramatic Liverpool comeback.

However, the Anfield roar was swiftly muted as Harry Maguire climbed highest to meet Bruno Fernandes’ outstanding cross with a thumping header.

United are now up to ninth place in the Premier League table and just four points below fourth.

After the final whistle, Dalot spoke to reporters and expressed his delight that the performances shown in training were finally reflected in a match setting.

He also urged his teammates to build on the momentum generated at Anfield to finally embark on a run of positive performances and results.

Dalot’s statement

Dalot said [as quoted by BBC], “I’ve been here long enough to understand everyone will have opinions.”

“Everyone will have something to say about Manchester United. You just have to be ready for that because you’re playing for the biggest club in the world.”

“Sometimes, especially this season, we’ve been doing really well in training but then the results are not coming on and that’s what everybody sees.”

The Portuguese defender added, “Ultimately, they will judge what you do on the pitch on the weekend, so we have to win games. That has to be the mindset.”

Up next for Dalot and his teammates is a home meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
