Tributes poured in for Diogo Jota on Thursday after the Liverpool forward and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a car accident in northwestern Spain.

Jota was just 28 and had recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso. Andre Silva was also a professional player for Portuguese second-tier club FC Penafiel.

Liverpool say they are “devastated” by the news of Diogo’s passing, while former club Wolves say they are “utterly heartbroken”. Fans gathered outside Anfield to pay tributes to the late footballers.

Premier League clubs, including rivals Everton and Manchester United, send their condolences to the Silva family and the Merseyside outfit.

Ruben Neves, who played with Jota at Wolves, posted: “They say we only lose people when we forget about them. I’ll never forget you!” The pair played a key role in Wanderers’ promotion-winning campaign in 2018 and were also international teammates with Portugal.

The Midlands club said: “Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. You will be truly missed, and always remembered.”

The Portuguese Football Federation say they are “utterly heartbroken” by the passing of the two players. UEFA have accepted their request to observe a minute’s silence this Thursday before the women’s national team plays Spain at Euro 2025.

“We have lost two champions,” the PFF said. “The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honor their legacy daily.”

Cristiano Ronaldo said Jota’s passing “doesn’t make sense”. The Al-Nassr striker posted: “Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.”

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said he has been left in a “state of shock”.

“I cannot believe it, it’s so sad and devastating for his family, his wife and three wonderful children,” he says. “He lived really close to us but kept himself to himself. He came across as very quiet and humble, a real family man…

“It’s not really about the football and Liverpool right now, but about his family and three lovely kids.”

Carragher’s colleague and former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville called the news “heartbreaking”. “All my love and best wishes to his family,” he added.

Former Liverpool strikers Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore both paid their respects on social media. Fowler called Jota’s death “devastating and unbelievably sad”, while Collymore posted that he feels a “profound sense of shock, sadness and disbelief” following the news.

Former club FC Porto posted: “It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks. Rest in peace.”
