Tottenham Hotspur may decide against signing Joao Palhinha on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Spurs signed Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich last summer, with an option to make the move permanent.

The north London club would need to pay a fee in the region of £25.8m to complete the transfer, but they are now considering whether to proceed with the deal.

Will Joao Palhinha stay at Tottenham?

Palhinha joined Bayern Munich after impressing for Fulham in the Premier League, but he has struggled to replicate that form in Germany.

The 30-year-old quickly fell down the pecking order under Vincent Kompany and was subsequently loaned out to Spurs.

Palhinha has made 19 Premier League starts for Tottenham, while also featuring seven times from the bench.

The Portugal international has registered three goals and two assists in the league, while adding two more goals in the UEFA Champions League.

However, Spurs have endured a difficult Premier League campaign and are currently embroiled in a relegation battle.

If they are relegated to the Championship, a mass departure of key players could follow, leaving them with little chance of signing Palhinha permanently.

What Bayern Munich plan to do?

Christian Falk claims that Tottenham may decide against making Palhinha’s move permanent, which could see the midfielder return to Bayern.

The Bavarian club are keen to sell the player and remain hopeful that he will stay in the Premier League rather than return to Germany.

“It is TRUE: Palhinha could depart Tottenham in the summer. There is a discussion ongoing at Bayern Munich because they wanted to sell the player to Spurs (as he’s currently on loan). They’d hoped the Premier League club would end up triggering the release clause (about €30m [£25.8m]). It could be that Tottenham won’t look to sign him at the moment, whilst the future of the club remains very open. From Bayern’s perspective, they’re talking about selling him to another Premier League club if he does come back to Munich. He’s played well in England, and other clubs are watching him and seeing that he’s not the problem at Tottenham. So, Bayern are optimistic that Palhinha won’t return to Germany in the summer and he’ll still be playing in the Premier League next season. But nobody knows if it will still be at Tottenham!”
