Dominic Calvert-Lewin has confirmed his exit from Everton with the forward set to leave as a free agent.
Calvert-Lewin’s contract expires tomorrow and he will be available on a free transfer. The 28-year-old leaves Everton after nine seasons, in which he scored 71 goals in 273 games. He broke into the England side during his time with the Toffees but has seen injury problems plague his recent career.
Despite that, there is likely to be suitors willing to gamble on Calvert-Lewin as a free agent. We’ve looked at four potential destinations for the outgoing Everton forward.
Leeds United are back in the Premier League after promotion from the Championship last season. Daniel Farke’s side won the second-tier title but the increasing gap between the top two divisions means reinforcements are required. The last six promoted teams have gone straight back down.
Last season’s leading scorer, Joel Piroe, has no previous experience of the Premier League and Calvert-Lewin could be an astute addition as Farke seeks additions.
Calvert-Lewin could also offer an alternative profile to Piroe, given his aerial ability. He ranked in the top eight percent of Premier League forwards for aerial duels won per game last season. Piroe, in contrast, was in the bottom 18% of forwards in the second tier on the same metric.
Newcastle United expressed interest in signing Calvert-Lewin last summer, as part of a PSR-motivated merry-go-round of deals. A transfer failed to come to fruition due to Everton’s asking price, but Newcastle are sure to consider a free transfer move.
Callum Wilson is out of contract at Newcastle and his future remains unclear. The Magpies have offered Wilson a new deal, but on incentivised terms given his injury issues. Should, as expected, he depart, Calvert-Lewin may emerge as an option to provide support to Alexander Isak at St James’ Park.
West Ham have a wretched history when it comes to signing strikers and some fans may cringe at the thought of Calvert-Lewin, no stranger to the treatment room, arriving at the London Stadium. Last summer’s marquee addition, Niclas Fullkrug, managed just six league starts, while loanee Evan Ferguson struggled for game time.
However, the Hammers have little financial room to manoeuvre in the summer window without sales and will be assessing the free agent market. On the right terms, a deal for Calvet-Lewin makes sense.
Could Calvert-Lewin be tempted north of the border? With Johnny Kenny expected to depart amid interest from Football League sides, an out-and-out forward to compete with Adam Idah is likely to be sought.
The Scottish Premiership might be a step down from the Premier League, but the prospect of silverware and Champions League football is a huge attraction.
