Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong, 20, has died from a gunshot wound to the head after an armed attack on Berekum Chelsea’s team coach while they were returning from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed his death and called for all necessary steps to ensure justice, adding that it would consult key stakeholders to review and strengthen travel security for clubs.
The squad were travelling from Samreboi to Berekum, a journey of about 270 km, when during the first third of the trip the coach came under fire at a roadblock.
The driver tried to avoid the obstacle and the vehicle skidded into roadside bushes. Around 22:30, players and staff sought cover as the attackers kept shooting, injuring several.
Frimpong was struck in the head, taken to a hospital in Bibiani and died while receiving treatment. The ambush involved six men, three armed with shotguns.
Police have launched an operation to find and arrest those responsible. Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan in January and had been with the club for only four months, and the incident has been described locally as one of Ghanaian sport’s darkest moments.
