In a major development, MARCA reports that Thibaut Courtois and Real Madrid have finalised an agreement to extend the goalkeeper’s contract.
The Belgian international’s current deal was originally set to expire on 30 June 2026. The new deal adds one additional season, taking it up to 2027, with no clauses linked to match appearances or other conditions for a further extension.
The agreement is now done deal, with an official announcement the only thing pending. The veteran goalkeeper will begin preparations for the new season on 4 August under the updated terms with the club he joined from Chelsea in 2018.
Initial speculation had suggested that the extension might include an optional second year based on Courtois’ match participation, keeping him tied down to the club until 2028.

But Real Madrid have remained firm in their policy of renewals for veteran players over 30 – contracts are only renewed year by year.
The agreement has been reached well in advance, avoiding the situation faced by players like Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez last year, who negotiated renewals in the final months of their contracts.
Real Madrid’s continued faith in Courtois is clear. By securing the renewal early, the Merengues also dismissed various offers that were made during the past season to bring in other top goalkeepers..
At one point, Joan Garcia was mentioned as a possible target for Real Madrid’s goalkeeping department.
Courtois remains the undisputed starter for Real Madrid, as confirmed by Xabi Alonso during the FIFA Club World Cup, and there are no signs of a change in that hierarchy. Andriy Lunin, for his part, will continue as the backup.
