Corinthians drew 1-1 with Santos at Vila Belmiro on Sunday in round six of the Campeonato Brasileiro. After the clássico, head coach Dorival Júnior assessed where his side should compete over the season.
According to Meu Timao, he stressed how hard the league is to read in its early stages and used current table surprises to make the point.
The result left Corinthians eighth on eight points, currently within a 2027 Copa Sudamericana qualifying berth. Their start reads two wins, two draws and two defeats, a 44.44% return.
He pointed to São Paulo leading with full merit and Cruzeiro sitting in the relegation zone, scenarios few predicted before kick-off. He described the Brasileiro as the most treacherous and hardest in the world, noting many would have picked only three favourites, Flamengo, Palmeiras and another side.
He said preparation must be constant and reiterated the need to replenish the squad, with gaps still being filled to find balance. Corinthians are also seeking an upturn on 2025, when they finished 13th on 47 points, the lowest of the Paulista clubs.
The draw extended their winless run to five, their last victory coming on 19 February at Athletico Paranaense’s Arena da Baixada in the league. They visit Chapecoense on Thursday, 19, for round seven, with kick-off at 21:30 at Arena Condá.
