Doubts surrounding the future of Schalke head coach Kees van Wonderen

Bild reports that the future of Schalke head coach Kees van Wonderen is now in doubt after the club’s poor showing against Magdeburg last weekend.

Schalke had been unbeaten in five games heading into the game against Magdeburg on Saturday, they managed to create themselves a cushion of seven points to the relegation places. However, against the Saxony side, die Königsblau would surcum to a 5-2 loss, which present a fresh set of doubts on the manager.

There are three scenarios for the future of the Dutch head coach:

Van Wonderen shows that he can develop the Schalke team from now until the end of the season and show that promotion is a possibility, then he will stay on as coach going into next season.
Schalke will keep the Dutch head coach in charge until the end of the season, but if doubts about his capabilities persist then he will leave. In Gelsenkirchen, they do not want to make the same mistake as this season with Karel Geraerts, who was fired earlier in the season.
If Schalke’s form nose dives and they fall towards the relegation zone, then van Wonderen will be sacked.

An obvious statement here, but the higher Schalke finish in the table the better due to the increase in TV money. Die Königsblau are currently €162m in debt and their situation does not look like it is to improve anytime soon.

Schalke’s next game is against 1.FC Köln.
