Barcelona captain Frenkie de Jong’s World Cup ended in frustration as the Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco.

Frenkie started the game and played close to 110 minutes for the Oranje before being taken off, only to see his team lose on penalties.

Dutch analysts focused much of their criticism on Ronald Koeman’s tactical plan, but Frenkie’s performance also came under scrutiny after a difficult night in midfield.

Dutch icon Rafael van der Vaart was especially harsh. Speaking on NOS, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, he said:

“Frenkie de Jong played the worst match I have ever seen from him.”

That is strong criticism, and it naturally stands out because Frenkie had earlier pushed back against those who question his influence, saying many people watch football without truly understanding it.

System did not help him

To be fair, Van der Vaart also pointed to the tactical context. He said:

“It was really disappointing, but that is also because of the system. I consider midfield to be Morocco’s strongest point, and even so we decided to play against them with only two midfielders.”

He added: “I am very disappointed with Holland. We got through the group stage quite well.

“Things were starting to work, so what goes through your mind for you to suddenly have to do things completely differently against Morocco? I do not understand anything at all.”

Frenkie was not at his best, but he was also put in a structure that did not protect his strengths. Against a strong Moroccan midfield, the Netherlands lacked control, numbers and rhythm.

Jan Mulder also criticised the Barça midfielder’s caution, saying: “He was too cautious, I only saw sideways passes.”

Barça know his value

This game against Morocco is not an indication of Frenkie’s level. One bad knockout match does not erase what he brings: ball-carrying, pressure resistance, progression and the ability to connect defence with attack.

Frenkie had been sublime for the Dutch throughout the group stage but could not manage being overloaded by Morocco in midfield on this occasion.

Barcelona fans know what the captain brings to the table and there is not much to read into this. It is now time for Frenkie to take a vacation and return refreshed for pre-season under Hansi Flick.
