SC Cambuur, who play in the Eerste Divisie – the second tier of Dutch football – are reportedly interested in Manchester United youngster Ethan Wheatley.

Wheatley is believed to be among a number of academy starlets United are eager to loan out this month, with the club keen on securing first-team football for them.

United want their young players to join teams that can provide a clear plan for their development. This is because the Red Devils want to avoid situations where the players move to higher-placed sides, only for them to not get adequate minutes.

Wrexham and Stockport County have previously been mentioned to be potential destinations for Wheatley.

Now, Jonathan Ploeg of Leeuwarder Courant reports that Cambuur are plotting a swoop for Wheatley.

According to Ploeg, “Ethan Wheatley is a candidate to become the new striker of SC Cambuur.”

“Technical manager Lars Lambooij confirms that Wheatley is on his list. According to him, the Englishman is not so much a super strong point of contact, but a player who can score goals.”

It’s understood that if a transfer gets over the line, it will be a loan deal. United are not interested in sanctioning a permanent sale of the teenager.

Ploeg adds that Wrexham and Stockport are still in the race to land Wheatley before the winter window closes on February 3.

Wheatley made his senior debut for United in April last year, after he came on as a substitute in the 4-2 victory over Sheffield United.

In doing so, he made history, becoming United’s 250th academy graduate to line up for the senior team.

Wheatley’s has yet to make an appearance in the Premier League or Europa League this term.
