Experienced center-back Stefan de Vrij has found himself on the fringes of the Inter Milan squad this season.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport via FCInterNews, the 34-year-old made an honest admission about his fall from grace at San Siro.

Despite playing a major role in Inter’s two Serie A titles in the last five years, Stefan de Vrij has lost his first-team status this term.

Unfortunately, the former Lazio defender has seen his playing time dwindle under the stewardship of Cristian Chivu.

For context, the Dutchman has made just 14 appearances in all competitions, registering only five Serie A starts.

Overtaken by Yann Bisseck and Manuel Akanji in the pecking order, De Vrij is ready to wave goodbye to San Siro after eight years.

Indeed, his contract expires in June, with Inter reluctant to offer him a new deal.

Therefore, the veteran will leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, he is looking to feature for the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup.

Despite falling out of favor at San Siro, De Vrij received Ronald Koeman’s call-up for March’s friendlies against Ecuador and Norway.

As such, it’s reasonable to expect the Nerazzurri ace to be on the plane to North America this summer.

“First of all, I’m happy for the trust the coach places in me,” he told Ziggo Sport. “Of course, I haven’t played much with the Inter jersey.

“However, I’m glad Koeman has shown me this trust and gave me the chance to play against Ecuador.

“We know each other well. He knows I give my all in both matches and training. That’s how I try to be important in my own way.
