Time is running out for FC Bayern to make a decision on Dayot Upamecano’s contract. After the 2-2 draw in Hamburg, sporting director Max Eberl spoke clearly about the unresolved situation. His words leave no doubt that the club now expects clarity.

Following the match, Max Eberl commented on the future of Dayot Upamecano. When asked about the faltering talks, he said: „How communication actually works internally is up to us. But it’s also clear: a decision has to be made at some point.“

The centre-back’s contract with FC Bayern Munich expires in the summer of 2026. From Munich’s perspective, it is clear that an extension must be signed now to prevent him leaving on a free transfer in a few months‘ time. So far, however, Upamecano has not accepted the offer on the table.

Freund speaks of „near future“ – deadline remains internal

Sporting director Christoph Freund had previously commented on the situation. He reacted evasively to reports of a possible deadline for a decision: „We have never given any status reports. We have always said that we are in good talks. There is no new status on that.“

At the same time, Freund made it clear that the talks should not drag on much longer: „There will be a decision in the near future, that’s for sure. But I’m not going to talk about any deadlines now.“

According to BILD, there is a clear expectation internally that Upamecano should make a decision by tomorrow Sunday at the latest. The background to this is the advanced stage of the season: without an extension, FC Bayern would have to look at alternatives immediately so as not to go into the summer unprepared.

In sporting terms, Upamecano remains a key player and is one of the central pillars of the defense under Vincent Kompany, which is precisely why those responsible are now pushing for a prompt decision.
