Ecstasy turned to agony in Sunderland’s Keel Square as England were knocked out of the World Cup by Argentina, 2-1, in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Sunderland Echo reports that hundreds packed the city-centre square to watch the action on giant screens.

Thomas Tuchel’s side struck early in the second half, only to concede twice late on as the match slipped away.

Photographs from North News & Pictures, by Will Walker, charted the mood swing as the evening unfolded.

The images showed a young fan roaring, arms raised in confidence, faces fixed on the screen, and patriotic smiles that faded with the late turnaround.
