Fresh £100m transfer talk around Sandro Tonali has handed Newcastle United an unwanted sideshow before Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park. According to Sunderland Echo, the midfielder’s agent has floated a move to England’s elite.

Giuseppe Riso indicated that joining a title-chasing club, such as Arsenal or Manchester City, has long formed part of Tonali’s plan to establish himself as a star in England, and he portrayed his client as among the most valuable Italian players.

The 25-year-old arrived from AC Milan in 2023 for about £52m and is contracted until 2029, with an option for a further year. Interest could grow this summer, particularly if he shines internationally, and Riso hinted the World Cup may shape what follows.

Tonali missed the 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend due to illness, the same bug that has recently affected Nick Woltemade and Anthony Gordon. Eddie Howe is hopeful of a swift return as Newcastle prepare for a demanding run that includes a Champions League last-16 meeting with Barcelona.

Newcastle reportedly have no intention of selling and would seek around £80m to £100m if any club tested their resolve. The timing of the agent’s remarks adds another subplot to a highly charged week, with Barcelona and Sunderland looming.
