Eddie Howe gives fitness update as Newcastle trio ruled out of Sunderland derby | OneFootball

According to Sunderland Echo, Eddie Howe has yet to decide if Sandro Tonali will face Sunderland on Sunday, while Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are sidelined until after the international break.

Tonali, a key figure since a reported £55m move from AC Milan in 2023, impressed in the 1-1 first leg of Newcastle’s Champions League round of 16 tie with Barcelona. He then sustained a groin and hip issue in the 7-2 defeat at Camp Nou, putting his derby involvement at risk.

A scan back in the North East indicated the problem is not as serious as initially feared, and Howe will make a late call on the midfielder’s availability.

Sunderland visit Tyneside seeking a league double after December’s win at the Stadium of Light, sealed by an own goal from Magpies club record signing Nick Woltemade.

Howe urged his players to draw on the experience and emotions from that defeat to deliver a stronger display this time. He said the potential upside for supporters and the city is significant, stressed preparation and recovery as Newcastle try to win, and added the players will be ready with eight games to go.
