Sandro Tonali is a major doubt for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby, with Eddie Howe yet to decide on the midfielder’s involvement. The Newcastle United manager said the issue is not as severe as initially feared, and a decision will be taken closer to the game.
According to Sunderland Echo, Tonali impressed in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 first leg, then sustained an apparent groin and hip problem in the 7-2 second-leg defeat at Camp Nou. He underwent a scan after returning to the North East.
Howe has ruled out Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar until after the international break.
Sunderland won the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light in December, an own goal from Newcastle’s club-record signing Nick Woltemade separating the sides. Howe urged his players to use the lessons from that defeat as they seek a response on Tyneside.
He stressed the need for a strong performance and thorough preparation, noting the potential boost for fans and the city. Howe added that recovery, physically and mentally, remains key, and that eight significant games still lie ahead.
