Eddie Howe has resigned as Newcastle head coach to take a break after close to five years in charge. The club said in a statement that he had informed them of his decision to step down.

His entire coaching team, Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, also leave with him.

The decision, reached after careful reflection, is personal. After devoting nearly five years of energy to the club, stepping back to recharge is seen as best for him and Newcastle.

Although he had signalled at the end of last season that he intended to continue, the choice proved incredibly hard. After long stints at Bournemouth from 2008-2011 and 2012-2020, Burnley in 2011-2012, then Newcastle, he opted to pause.

Appointed in 2021, the 48-year-old delivered the 2025 League Cup, the club’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years. Newcastle had felt like home for him and his family, and the city and supporters were central to his thanks.
