Manchester City could be without their number one choice goalkeeper Ederson for a large chunk of the season’s run-in, new reports have indicated.
The Etihad Stadium’s go-to shot-stopper for the entirety of their trophy-laden years under Pep Guardiola is currently enduring one of his more complex campaigns on the pitch as he continues to battle a number of fitness and injury problems.
Pressure from Stefan Ortega Moreno for the leading role in goal for the club has seen Ederson’s game and standards increased significantly in recent years, although opportunities for the German have stepped up over the last nine months owing to absences from Ederson.
Uncertainty over the 31-year-old’s ability to remain fit will no doubt raise further question marks over whether the Manchester City goalkeeper is a player the club can rely on heading into a summer market expected to bring plenty of change for the club’s first-team squad.
And much of City’s decision making around the goalkeeper position could centre around fitness testing on Ederson’s newest injury, sustained during the second-half of the club’s dramatic 5-2 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
According to the information of the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, Ederson had scans at the City Football Academy this week in order to assess the extent of his latest injury setback.
However, while the club are waiting on the full results, it is revealed that there are early worries that the club’s number one choice between the posts could be sidelined for ‘a number of weeks’ with a groin problem.
Pep Guardiola could provide an update on the fitness of his number one goalkeeper as soon as Friday afternoon, with the Manchester City manager facing the media in a press conference ahead of the club’s visit to Everton at Goodison Park – their final trip to the iconic stadium.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Ederson’s latest injury and the extent of assessments currently taking place, the common belief is that Stefan Ortega Moreno will start for City against David Moyes’ side.
Manchester City’s squad will resume training this week after a couple of sanctioned days off after the clash with Crystal Palace, taking advantage of the club’s rare free midweeks during the usual hectic business end of a season.
