Edinson Cavani has undergone a minimally invasive lumbar procedure to tackle persistent back pain, an outpatient treatment chosen to avoid major surgery, according to LaNumer12.com.ar.

The Uruguayan forward had been hampered by recurring discomfort that disrupted his recent run. A conventional operation had been feared, which would have sidelined him for many months. Instead, specialists opted for radiofrequency thermolesion, a method that uses electromagnetic waves to heat and deactivate nerves that transmit chronic pain.

The procedure rules him out of regular training during the squad's break. He last played on 20 February.

There is strong hope the targeted block will deliver the desired relief. The expected recovery window is roughly one and a half to two months, subject to his daily progress and how he tolerates increased workload for the second half of the year.

With official football paused for the World Cup, recovery time is relatively on his side. The team are due back at Ezeiza on 18 June, when the striker will continue a tailored rehabilitation programme.

The Xeneize are not scheduled to play until 23 July. Given the rest period and subsequent conditioning, the forward is likely to miss the start of the official campaign.
