Edu’s position at Nottingham Forest remains under scrutiny, with any decision on the club’s global head of football likely delayed until an end-of-season review as Vitor Pereira seeks stability.
As reported by The Athletic in August, Nuno Espirito Santo had a falling out with Edu that strained relations, and he was sacked in September despite leading Forest into Europe last season.
Ange Postecoglou lasted 39 days without a win in eight matches, and Sean Dyche was dismissed after 114 days. The campaign began to unravel after Edu’s July appointment.
Edu, who works across Evangelos Marinakis’s group including Olympiacos and Rio Ave, has not attended recent matches, including the 2-2 draw at Manchester City on Wednesday.
Despite that draw, they remain level on 28 points with 18th-placed West Ham. Attention is on the final nine league games and the Europa League last 16 against Midtjylland, starting with a home tie next Thursday.
Edu oversaw a £200 million recruitment drive that brought 13 signings, many yet to make an impact. Loans for Oleksandr Zinchenko and Douglas Luiz were terminated early, Arnaud Kalimuendo joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan, and January arrival Lorenzo Lucca has struggled.
There have been positives. Igor Jesus has filled in during Chris Wood’s injury, Jair Cunha has shown promise in defence, and £35 million signing Omari Hutchinson looks a prospect.
Edu’s hiring was billed as a statement of intent after his Arsenal reputation. Instead, Forest risk this season ending with a different kind of step down.
