Sunderland have decided not to activate the one-year option in Harrison Jones’ contract, leaving the academy graduate free to depart this summer, Sunderland Echo understands.
The Wearside-born midfielder made his senior debut in August 2024, coming on for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup first round defeat against then-Championship rivals Preston North End.
He has since made six further first-team outings, including two starts under Regis Le Bris in the final month of last season’s promotion push. He also started an FA Cup third round defeat against Stoke City, which he described as a dream come true.
This season, Jones’ senior action has been limited to one start in August’s Carabao Cup loss to Huddersfield Town. He was an unused substitute in 12 Premier League matches and was on the bench for last month’s Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle.
Loan interest surfaced from EFL clubs in January, but an injury in a Premier League International Cup game against Borussia Dortmund quickly ended those plans.
Since returning, he has captained the Under-21s over the last month and caught the eye with a fine free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County earlier this week.
Scouts were in attendance and he is believed to have admirers in League One and League Two, plus the Scottish Premiership. At least five EFL sides and two north of the border are said to have signalled a willingness to discuss a deal.
