Eliezer Mayenda left Sunderland for Ligue 1 side Rennes earlier this week, a deal that ranks third in Sunderland’s history, with two still higher.
The player said in a post that he was grateful to chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, his team-mates, staff and supporters, and he reflected on Wembley as Sunderland returned to the Premier League.
Mayenda arrived from Sochaux in summer 2023 on a cut-price deal and took senior minutes during a loan at Hibernian. He became a key figure in the 2024/25 promotion run, scoring the equaliser in the play-off final win over Sheffield United.
Brian Brobbey’s arrival curtailed his minutes on Sunderland’s top-flight return. Mayenda made eight league starts last season and scored in a 3-0 win against West Ham United on the opening day.
He now heads to Rennes aiming to make an impact, and could face Sunderland in the Europa League.
