Councillors have approved plans to expand Elland Road, clearing the way for a major upgrade of the stadium.

The club said in a statement that planning permission had been granted to lift capacity from 37,645 to up to 53,000 through expanding the West and North Stands with targeted South Stand alterations, which would make Elland Road the seventh largest football ground in England, create a UEFA Category 4 venue and enable bids to host major tournaments and showcase events, and that 98% of consultation respondents supported the design.

Councillors highlighted parking, traffic and disruption for nearby residents during the meeting before approving the scheme by 11 votes to one.

Approval allows work to begin on the West Stand, with detailed plans for the North Stand to follow.

Leeds United and owners 49ers Enterprises lodged the application last summer.
