Manchester United have operated with a makeshift midfield pivot of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro this season.
After a shaky start, they are now beginning to find their rhythm, and have climbed to sixth in the Premier League table following a run of four wins in five games.
Despite their improved form, a new midfielder remains firmly on Ruben Amorim’s agenda ahead of 2026.
Recent reports suggest that Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is under consideration for the job at the Theatre of Dreams.
United enquired about the availability of Carlos Baleba in the summer, but the Cameroonian’s recent dip in form has raised doubts over a potential move in 2026.
Anderson, meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength with the West Bridgford side and has been in superb form so far this season.
Although Fernandes has adapted well to his new position, the Englishman could allow the Portuguese to be a little more adventurous in matches.
Meanwhile, Casemiro is already on the wrong side of 30, and his contract expires in a little over six months. Anderson could also serve as a long-term replacement for the Brazilian at Old Trafford.
The 22 year old has registered one assist in 12 appearances for Forest across competitions this season, all of which were starts. Anderson’s performances have reportedly convinced United, but it now appears that prising him away from the City Ground will not be a walk in the park.
According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Nottingham Forest are likely to demand between £100 and 120 million to let Anderson leave in the summer of 2026.
Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in the Englishman, which could complicate matters for the Red Devils.
Plettenberg adds that Forest are aware of the growing interest in their prized asset and are planning to demand a premium fee for his signature next year.
The player is under contract at the City Ground until 2029, so the West Bridgford side hold the upper hand in negotiations. Anderson’s deal contains no release clause.
United are expected to invest heavily in midfield in 2026, but the Englishman’s valuation could influence their plans.
