Elversberg clinched their first Bundesliga promotion with a 3-0 win over already-relegated Preußen Münster, sealing a top-flight place for 2026/27 a season after a late play-off defeat to Heidenheim.
"I've been a bit excited for the last two days," he told Sky. After last week’s defeat to the eventually relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf, he added, "We were allowed to learn last week, and then we did better today."
The club have been reshaped since that heartbreak. Long-term coach Horst Steffen left for Werder Bremen after leading the side from the fourth tier to consecutive promotions and a third-place finish in the second tier, then was sacked by Bremen in February.
Vincent Wagner arrived from Hoffenheim II and saw key attackers Fisnik Asllani and Muhammed Damar return to Hoffenheim as loans ended, with Robin Fellhauer moving to FC Augsburg. In January the league’s top scorer, Younes Ebnoutalib, departed for Eintracht Frankfurt. Sporting director Nils-Ole Book left a couple of months ago to take a similar role at Borussia Dortmund.
Even so, Elversberg edged out Paderborn and Hannover in the run-in to nail promotion. Celebrating with supporters and mascot Paul, the 40-year-old added: "Of course, this is something special. A friend of mine said this week, 'If Elv can get promoted, it's like flying to the moon.' And we managed to make the moon landing today."
