Five more nations have reached the World Cup last 32 after Group H’s final results. According to L'Équipe, England, Portugal, Ghana, Egypt and Paraguay advanced as a consequence.
Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 and Cape Verde drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia in Group H, outcomes that confirmed the quintet’s progression.
This first 48-team edition is already producing unusual scenarios, with five teams progressing at once due to another group’s finish.
Under the rules, the eight best third-placed sides qualify for the next round. Each of the five already has four points, so they are assured, at worst, of that route, while all but Paraguay can still finish in their groups’ top two. Third-placed teams in groups A, C, H and I, already closed, cannot surpass four points, namely South Korea on three, Scotland on three, Uruguay on two and Senegal on three.
The newly qualified sides take the total to 26 and join Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Morocco, the United States, Australia, Germany, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, France, Norway, Argentina, Colombia, the Netherlands, Japan and Sweden. Six places remain to be decided by Saturday evening.
