Last chance for Three Lions stars to impress Thomas Tuchel at Wembley before World Cup squad selection

England face Japan in another important fixture at Wembley tonight. Though it’s a friendly in name, the stakes are high as it’s the final chance for both sets of players to send a crucial message to their respective managers ahead of the World Cup squad selection deadline in May. The Three Lions do not play again before Thomas Tuchel picks his 26-man group for the finals in North America, with plenty of questions still lingering and key decisions to be made following Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

Tuchel effectively split an expanded squad into two for these March games, with a number of his first-choice stars returning this evening. That includes captain Harry Kane, but England have also been hit by a spate of injury withdrawals including Arsenal trio Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Noni Madueke. That is set to lead to more chances for players hoping to impress ahead of the World Cup, including the likes of Jarrod Bowen.
