Enrique Riquelme has decided to present his candidacy for the Real Madrid presidency to challenge Florentino Pérez, El Confidencial reports. He is in advanced talks with financial institutions to secure the 187 million euros pre-guarantee required by the club’s statutes, a prerequisite for any alternative slate.

Riquelme has until 23 May to formalise the pre-guarantee and register his bid. The report says he reached the decision after several meetings with close advisers over the weekend.

He is working alongside David Mesonero of Iberdrola on a platform framed as a renewing alternative aimed at restoring sporting and institutional stability.

Riquelme’s camp is said to believe a section of the fanbase wants change after recent on-field controversies, dressing-room tensions and disputes involving the club with Spanish and European football bodies.

The report also argues that the electoral calendar driven by Pérez makes it hard for challengers, giving them only days to declare and no access to the members’ roll.
