Benfica are moving for Samú Costa after RCD Mallorca’s relegation, with his place at the World Cup for Portugal encouraging suitors to act. The push could also affect Enzo Barrenechea’s standing at the club.
The Lisbon side want him this summer to strengthen midfield, though a significant outlay would be required. Cadena Ser reports that 20 percent of Costa’s rights are owned by Almería, complicating negotiations with Mallorca.
Any deal would have to exceed 10 million euros and would take one of last season’s standout performers out of Spain.
Costa’s arrival could dislodge former Valencia player Barrenechea, who currently operates in the same area of the pitch. That scenario may see him seek a new destination next season.
Barrenechea made a positive impression at Mestalla and began well in Lisbon, but his influence waned over the months under José Mourinho, who could also leave this summer.
