Argentine suggested he was open to leaving the club after Champions League humiliation by Paris Saint-Germain

Enzo Fernandez has cast further doubt on his Chelsea future, doubling down on the earlier suggestion that he would consider his options following the World Cup.

The Argentine, who is currently preparing for pre-World Cup friendlies against Mauritania and Zambia, first called his future into question after Chelsea were trounced 8-2 on aggregate by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Asked after that match whether he would still be a Chelsea player next season, he said: “I don't know. Right now I'm focused on here, then there's the World Cup, and we'll see.”

Chelsea, who have suffered further humbling losses to Newcastle and Everton in recent weeks, are not thought to be open to selling Fernandez, who is under contract until 2032.

He has been tenuously linked with a move to Real Madrid since speaking out last week, but in a new update issued from Argentina’s camp, Fernandez insisted no talks have yet been held.

He told ESPN Argentina: “There are no talks. Right now I'm focused on Chelsea, we'll see after the World Cup.”

For Chelsea to lose their vice captain would be a considerable blow, but he may push for a move should the Blues fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Speaking last week, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior was adamant that Fernandez was happy at Chelsea and not posturing for a transfer.

“I have a very, very good relationship with the players because we speak all the time,” said Rosenior.

“Not just about football, or the situation with their contracts, but about their life, with their kids, how their kids are, how school is. I have a very, very close relationship with Enzo and with the other players.

“In terms of contracts and where they want to be, there's not one player at this club since I've been here that has said that he doesn't want to be here in the summer.

“In fact, the conversations are more about how we improve, what we can do as a group to improve, what we need to do to win in this moment. And that's where we are at the moment.”
