The Chelsea midfielder played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup semi-final defeat of England on Wednesday night, scoring the equaliser in the 85th minute for his second goal of the tournament.

With tensions already running high inside the Atlanta Stadium as one of international football's most storied rivalries was renewed, Fernandez celebrated his goal wildly, cupping his ears and mimicked people talking.

It wasn’t clear as to whether Fernandez was aiming a dig at England fans with his celebrations, though he now certainly risks receiving a hostile reception up and down the country in the Premier League next season.

Taking to social media, Fernandez shared a post on his Instagram stories which featured an image of him alongside Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes accompanied by the Oasis song ‘Wonderwall’.

The trio were all laughing, providing further proof of the midfielder’s intentions to troll England after denying them a place in the World Cup 2026 final.

The ‘Wonderwall’ song has become the soundtrack to the Three Lions' World Cup campaign, with the squad gathering on the pitch after games to sing in unison in front of the England supporters in North America.

Presumably amid online backlash, Fernandez has since reshared the exact post but without any mention of ‘Wonderwall’.

Fernandez’s club Chelsea also came in for some backlash for their social media post following England’s defeat to Argentina.

Via their official X account, formerly Twitter, the Blues congratulated Fernandez on reaching back-to-back World Cup finals, although the post was later deleted as supporters reacted angrily.

The 25-year-old is expected to start for Argentina against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, bidding to help his team become just the third nation to retain the trophy after Italy and Brazil.
