Eray Cömert has spent three and a half years in Spain, one of them in France with Nantes. Across 73 games, 45 for Valencia and 28 for Real Valladolid, he has been central to three off-field flashpoints, the latest last Sunday. After Valencia’s derby win at Levante, he wrapped his shirt round a corner flag and waved it before Valencia’s fans.
According to AS, LaLiga judged the act to have created tension with Levante staff, players and supporters, and, at Levante’s request, expanded its report to the Competition Committee and the Anti-Violence Commission. Any sanction could hinge on those bodies and might set a precedent.
His album began in May 2023 against Real Madrid, when Vinicius was subjected to racist abuse and the culprits were swiftly identified, tried and punished. The insults followed a 70th-minute stoppage after Cömert tossed a second ball at Vinicius’s feet to halt a move, triggering a melee. He bore no responsibility for the abuse.
Vinicius remonstrated with the Mestalla crowd and threatened to leave, and later a larger fracas ended with his dismissal. Cömert helped mediate during a six-minute halt, appearing in images seen worldwide, including on the Ballon d’Or gala’s giant screen when Vinicius was honoured, which Valencia protested.
The third episode came in April 2025 at Valladolid, when a touchline clash saw Luis Pérez strike Juan Latasa with Cömert between them. His intervention, using his body and arms to restrain Pérez, softened the blows and prevented escalation.
Back to Sunday, Cömert has said he never intended to provoke or disrespect Levante’s fans or staff. As he headed for the tunnel at the Ciutat de València, a capped bottle struck his chest, which he absorbed without theatrics amid the fallout.
