Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has handed updates on the fitness of Erling Haaland and Nico O’Reilly after their 1-0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.
A solitary Antoine Semenyo strike on the cusp of half-time saw the Blues keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal in the title race, though the Gunners won a second London derby on the spin after seeing off Chelsea in a 2-1 win on Sunday.
City have won their last six games in all competitions as they stake a claim for an unprecedented quadruple in their first full season under the stewardship of director of football Hugo Viana.
The Blues will face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 22, having also progressed to the FA Cup fifth round – where they will face Newcastle United – and the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 stage – where they will come up against Real Madrid over two legs.
Guardiola’s side have well and truly turned a corner in the last month following a horror start to 2026 that saw questions raised over City’s title prospects, with the Blues giving away leads and succumbing to draws against Chelsea, Brighton and Tottenham already in the Premier League this year.
However, peaking at the right time has been the hallmark of Manchester City’s title-winning seasons under Guardiola and as they remain in the running for four trophies, the eight-time Premier League champions have turned the tide and are looking the part.
Semenyo maintained his excellent start to life at the Etihad Stadium since joining for £64 million from Bournemouth in January as he scored the only goal of a narrow win for City at Elland Road at the weekend.
Omar Marmoush partnered Semenyo in a two-man Manchester City frontline at Elland Road as Erling Haaland missed out entirely after suffering a ‘little’ training ground injury leading to the trip.
The Blues also saw Nico O’Reilly come off against Leeds United after 70 minutes with a fitness issue of his own and Guardiola handed updates on the Englishman as well as Haaland in his post-match press conference.
Guardiola confirmed that O’Reilly met with an ankle knock that forced him off at Elland Road. “Yeah, for the ankle. He had a knock on the ankle and played on, and was out. Well done.”
When asked whether O’Reilly could be available against Nottingham Forest in midweek, Guardiola added: “I don’t have an answer right now.”
The Manchester City manager added that Haaland’s issue is not a knee injury amid an expectation for the Norway international to recover in time for Wednesday evening’s Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest.
“He (Haaland) was not ready for today but we have four days before Nottingham Forest and after, three days in the FA Cup in Newcastle at 8PM – thank you so much for that time to go to Madrid with less recovery. Thank you,” Guardiola said.
Manchester City need to maintain the momentum they’ve worked so hard to gather since February as they continue to push Arsenal all the way, with 10 games remaining in the Premier League campaign.
City have a busy March on the horizon as they navigate a tight-packed scheduled across all competitions but having welcomed many crucial players back to fitness, Guardiola and his regiment can embark upon the final stretch of the marathon with full belief in their ability to mark a successful finish to the season.
