Manchester United chiefs have reportedly been tracking Joao Gomes since he broke onto the scene at Flamengo.

Now, he is an outside option on their shortlist of midfield targets heading into the summer window, with ESPN claiming the club have an ‘extensive dossier’ on the Molineux star.

Why United are considering Joao Gomes

While the likes of Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali will all be priced in the region of £80 million by their respective clubs, Wolverhampton Wanderers will likely already be well aware that Gomes is going to want a move when their relegation is set in stone.

He has proven he is more than capable of succeeding in the top flight, and even claimed the Man of the Match award at Old Trafford this campaign following Wolves’ 1-1 draw back in December.

How much will Wolves want for Gomes come the end of the season?

The 25-year-old has previously been valued at £44m, which is a reasonable price in today’s market for a young player who’s racked up 111 Premier League appearances, as well as 10 caps for the Brazil national team.

That being said, United might want to get to work on a deal swiftly in case Gomes is called up to the World Cup under Carlo Ancelotti and impresses at the tournament; not only would Wolves perhaps try to increase their price tag, but it could also lead to more clubs registering their interest and igniting a race for his signature.

Of course, the departure of Casemiro and prospective addition of Champions League football to the schedule means more than one signing will be essential if United are to really compete next term.
