Ethan Moore’s proposed permanent move to Gateshead has been put at risk amid uncertainty over Rob Elliot’s position at the National League club. Sunderland Echo understands that the Sunderland forward had been in line for a permanent switch, but doubt over the Heed manager’s future has complicated matters.
Moore joined Gateshead on loan in the second half of the 2025/26 campaign. His stint ended on the final day, when he scored his first senior goal in a defeat at Altrincham, before returning to Sunderland.
The 21-year-old is expected to leave Sunderland when his contract expires this summer. A permanent deal at the International Stadium had been anticipated after his encouraging spell.
In April, Elliot said Moore was still learning and building fitness, praising his impact against Carlisle while noting a lack of match sharpness. He said he hoped to secure him for the future, describing the forward as driven and emotionally invested in a positive way, and calling him a pleasure to coach with significant potential.
Those plans could now be shelved, with Elliot believed to be on the brink of stepping down after struggling to agree a plan to move the club forward on and off the pitch during recent meetings.
