Nottingham Forest seized control early, their lead swiftly doubled to boost Europa League play-off hopes, while Aston Villa fell behind at Villa Park.

Villa trailed 0-1 at half-time and had to replace the injured Ollie Watkins. Telegraph reports that Tammy Abraham, ineligible tonight, has come through the door and could start on Sunday. The extent of Watkins’ injury remains unclear.

At the interval Villa were third, one point behind Lyon and behind Freiburg on goal difference. Forest’s 2-0 advantage left Sean Dyche’s side up to 12th.

After the restart Salzburg doubled their lead. Alajbegovic skipped past challenges on the right, drove a low ball across the six-yard box and Yeo, just on the pitch, flicked past Martinez. By 52 minutes it was 0-2 and Villa had dropped to fourth, behind Lyon, Midtjylland and Freiburg.

At 53 minutes Forest were inches from a third, McAtee’s cross was glanced by Dominguez onto the far post. Jesus then made it 3-0, racing in behind his marker and finishing first time from the edge of the box into the bottom corner for his second of the night.
