England match winner Chloe Kelly says Michelle Agyemang has the “world at her feet” after she inspired the Lionesses to a second consecutive European Championships final.
19-year-old Agyemang, who scored the equaliser against Sweden in the quarter-final, was introduced in the 85th minute and rescued Sarina Wiegman’s side at the death with a 96th minute equaliser to force extra time.
Kelly believes the sky is the limit for the young Arsenal forward, who has now scored three times for the Lionesses in just four caps.
“She’s unbelievable,” Kelly said. “She should have scored again when she hit the crossbar. She’s got the world at her feet. A young player with a bright future. I’m absolutely buzzing for her.
“This team shows resilience but we fight back and hopefully we can make it easier for ourselves, we don’t need that panic.”
The game looked destined for penalties before Emma Severini fouled Beth Mead in the box with just two minutes remaining of extra time, with referee Ivana Martincic having no choice but to award the penalty. Kelly stepped up from the spot, but saw her attempt saved by Italy goalkeeper Laura Giuliani. Fortunately for the Arsenal forward she was first on the scene to convert the rebound and send England to the final.
The 27-year-old says reaching a third consecutive final is the least her side deserve.
“It feels unbelievable. Such a great feeling. This team deserves nothing but that. Three finals on the bounce and we want more.
“I just try my best for the team. It wasn’t supposed to go like that [the penalty] but obviously the keeper had done her homework. We go back to the drawing board and keep practicing those penalties. Luckily I got there for the tap-in.
“We have the hope, we have the belief and we have the quality so we just need to keep at it, and keep working hard at training to make sure we’re right next weekend.”
