Everton have completed a league double over neighbours Liverpool after defeating The Reds 2-0 at Anfield this afternoon.

In the penultimate game of the Barclays Women’s Super League season, Katja Snoeijs and Karen Holmgaard got the goals as Everton’s dominance in league Merseyside derbies continued.

The visitors broke the deadlock after seven minutes through Snoeijs. Kelly Gago moved quickly and carefully down the right-hand side and she pulled the ball back to the Dutch forward who slotted it into the bottom corner with her first touch.

Liverpool looked to respond and Fuka Nagano sent the ball to Sophie Román Haug, but she couldn’t get enough power on her shot to trouble visiting keeper Courtney Brosnan. The Reds continued to ramp up the intensity, but every time they moved towards the opposition goal, they were met with a blue wall of Everton defenders.

Olivia Smith was next to take aim at goal. She unleashed a powerful shot, but her strike flew just over the bar before Ceri Holland saw an effort stopped by Brosnan. Haug then had a huge opportunity to move the hosts level, but her shot was sent just wide of the post.

Liverpool went closer still through captain Taylor Hinds. The full-back had a go from 20 yards, but her effort bounced off the woodwork.

Smith had two more good chances to get The Reds back in the game. She first sent a volley wide before being denied by Brosnan.

Karen Holmgaard made it 2-0 to the visitors 21 minutes from time. Toni Payne broke down the left-hand side and played the ball to Holmgaard who poked it beyond Rachael Laws and into the back of the net.

Everton ended the game with 10 players with Sara Holmgaard receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on Smith. Despite being a player down, The Toffees were able to hang onto their two-goal advantage and claim the three points.

Liverpool end the 2024/2025 season with a fixture at Chelsea while Everton host Tottenham Hotspur on the final day.
