Everton have reignited their interest in Sporting CP right-back Georgios Vagiannidis, with Portuguese outlet A Bola reporting that a fee of just €10m could be enough to get a deal done. That figure represents a meaningful drop from the €12.5m plus potential add-ons that Sporting paid Panathinaikos to sign the Greek international last summer, making this an unexpectedly affordable opportunity for the Toffees. Everton had tracked Vagiannidis before that move, but ultimately missed out as Sporting beat them to his signature.
The 24-year-old started only 11 league games for Sporting this season, and the Portuguese club are reportedly open to letting him leave given his failure to convince in Lisbon. Both Everton and Villarreal have made inquiries, though no official offer has arrived from either side just yet. Vagiannidis has publicly stated his desire to stay and fight for his place, but his continued place in Sporting’s plans for next season remains far from certain, with a lack of regular football pushing him toward the exit.

Seamus Coleman has confirmed his departure from Everton at the end of the season, while Nathan Patterson has barely featured under Moyes and could also be moved on if reinforcements arrive. Jake O’Brien has done a reasonable job filling in at right-back, though it is not his natural position and moving him back into central defence would sharpen the entire defensive unit. Everton have also held talks over Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a second right-back option, with West Ham ready to sell for around £10m following their relegation.
We feel that Moyes needs a right-back far more urgently than he needs this particular one. Coleman is gone, Patterson is barely trusted, and O’Brien cannot carry that flank into a full season. The position is broken, and fixing it is not optional.
Vagiannidis, though, is a complicated option. He cost Sporting over €12m barely twelve months ago and still failed to hold down a starting berth in Lisbon, which raises a fair question about his readiness for the Premier League’s demands. Everton are not a side that can afford to absorb gambles in key defensive positions right now, not with Moyes building toward European qualification and the pressure mounting at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
That said, at €10m, the value argument is hard to dismiss entirely. He is young, technically capable, and carries genuine upside. If Moyes plans to pair him with a more experienced option like Wan-Bissaka, then the risk shrinks considerably. But as the primary right-back solution, Vagiannidis feels like a hope rather than a statement. Everton should push for a more proven first-choice and treat this pursuit as a smart backup plan rather than the headline answer.
