Goodison Park needs a bit of steel. It is no secret that the engine room has looked soft, vulnerable on the counter, and desperately short of someone to just sit there and stop the bleeding. Enter Mandela Keita.
As broken by Sean Lunt via Sport Witness, relayed by @NilSatisNews on X, formal talks have kicked off. Parma, however, are playing hardball. They want €25 million for their 24-year-old Belgian international. It is a chunky fee, no doubt. Especially for a club that have had to watch every single penny lately. But with Champions League-bound Atalanta also sniffing around the Stadio Ennio Tardini, there is absolutely no time for the Toffees to haggle in the bargain bin.

Look at his last season in Italy. 37 games. A massive 2,991 minutes on the pitch. He is durable. More importantly, he is incredibly tidy, clocking an 88.4% passing accuracy under heavy Serie A pressure. He does not panic. He simply gets the ball, shifts it to a teammate, and keeps the shape intact. Do not expect magic in the final third, though. One goal and one assist all year tells you exactly what he is, a pure, unadulterated defensive shield.
The most ridiculous stat is that Mandela Keita picked up just one solitary yellow card. To play that many minutes in the heart of a midfield and only get booked once requires an absurd level of positional intelligence. He does not need to make desperate, lunging tackles because he is already standing in the right position to cut out the danger.
David Moyes needs exactly this type of tactical discipline. The system relies on a reliable midfield anchor to protect the back four, and Keita is a good option for that blueprint. He offers zero attacking threat, but he cures the transition vulnerabilities that have plagued the team for months.
Other options on the market will cost just as much, if not more, without guaranteeing the same clean bill of fitness. Paying the €25 million valuation is a gamble, sure. But losing out to Atalanta because of boardroom hesitation would leave a massive hole in the squad right before the season kicks off.
