Everton reportedly making progress in James Garner talks | OneFootball

James Garner is set to sign a new contract with Everton ‘imminently’, according to a report by Harry Watkinson of TEAMtalk.

The 24-year-old’s contract is expiring this summer and renewing his deal is a priority for the management. Garner has stepped up and has become an influential player for David Moyes’ side.

He’s almost single-handedly bossed the Toffees midfield and has played every single game for the club so far this season. The consistency and level of his performances have put him in contention for a maiden England call-up. Garner was the man of the match in Everton’s fantastic 1-0 win over Aston Villa with Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel in attendance at Villa Park.

“We revealed on December 16 that Everton were ‘confident’ of tying Garner down to a new contract, though there was, at the time, a gap between the wage expectations of the club and the player,” said the TEAMtalk report.

“We can now confirm that the Toffees have made significant progress in negotiations with the Birkenhead-born star, with a full agreement on a new, long-term contract described as ‘imminent’ by sources.”

Garner signed for Everton from Manchester United in 2022 and has made over 100 appearances for the Toffees since then. He’s also an extremely versatile player and has also been deployed in the full-back position by Moyes when needed.

Although his current deal expires at the end of the season, Everton also have an option to extend his deal by an additional year. However, at this moment, a new deal for Garner seems to be on the horizon soon.

Good if we can get this done. Garner has been immense this season.

I would like him to chip in with a few more goals and upgrade his penalty taking however...

Christy (1), I absolutely agree with you. His technical ability has stood out everytime he's played and his decision-making and composure are well beyond his years. Should be one of the first names on the team sheet at the moment.

Also with Garner, Gana, Dewsbury-Hall, Armstrong, Rohl and Iroegbunam, that's a very strong midfield depth to have. Gives Moyes plenty of options to shake things up from the bench as well instead of making just two changes after 75 minutes in every game.

I think letting Armstrong go back to PNE is the right move, as long as Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcarz and Tim Iroegbunam are all due back in the next 3-4 weeks. He's clearly better than the last 2 and on par with Rohl.

But if Gana, Garner and Dewsbury-Hall can hold down the centre of the park until the end of the season, with the other 3 as cover, it makes sense for him to get guaranteed game time this season, then come back to boss the midfield alongside Dewsbury-Hall, Garner an Rohl next season.

Si there is an option but the feeling is always that you take a huge risk if you go into the final year of a contract that the player will choose to walk for free. Plus he’s outplayed his current contract wages, so it’s imperative we lock him down now for another 3-4 years, especially as he’s turning heads with his performances.

If Harrison starts most games then it's a no brainer. He will develop and learn far more playing in the top league than the one below. No doubt about that.
