Paris Saint-Germain moved on to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after beating Liverpool 4-1 in a penalty shootout (1-1 on aggregate) Tuesday night at Anfield.
While PSG supporters are celebrating, one former capital club player and current Everton veteran is happy with the result.
The first goal came in the 12th minute when Nuno Mendes played a ball to Ousmane Dembele in the middle, who quickly passed it to Bradley Barcola on the right. Barcola tried to return the ball to Dembele, but Ibrahima Konate’s sliding tackle inadvertently set Dembele up for an easy finish.
With neither side finding the back of the net in extra time, the match went to penalties. PSG converted all four attempts against Alisson Becker, while Gianluigi Donnarumma stood tall in goal.
Donnarumma conceded a penalty to Mohamed Salah but made crucial saves against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. The match ended when Desire Doue calmly converted the final penalty, sending PSG through to the next round.

One player who was happy with Donnarumma making those clutch saves in the penalty shootout is Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. The 35-year-old, who played at PSG from 2019 to 2022, uploaded a video on his Instagram story of the Italian making the saves against Nunez and Jones.
Moreover, the midfielder added “merci” to the video, thanking his former teammate for adding misery to the Toffees’ rival.
PSG will now face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarterfinals. Currently, the English side have a 3-1 aggregate lead heading into the second leg at Villa Park.
