Kai Havertz wrote himself into the history books when he scored for Arsenal against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday evening.
It was the second time the Germany international has scored in the decider after he netted the winner for Chelsea against Manchester City in 2021, securing the Blues’ second Champions League title.
Havertz scored early in this year’s finale, racing through on goal before rifling the ball above the goalkeeper’s head and into the roof of the net.
It was not enough to win the match as PSG came from behind to win via penalty shootout in Budapest, but the 26-year-old can console himself in the fact that he has matched some of game’s greatest ever players in one respect.
Havertz became only the ninth player to score in multiple finals, joining the likes of Lionel Messi, Raúl, Samuel Eto’o, gareth Bale and more in doing so.
More impressively, he is just the third player to score in multiple finals for more than one team, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic.
With Arsenal poised to challenge for the Champions League again in the years to come, Havertz might eye Ronaldo’s record of scoring in three separate finals. It’s not out of the realms of possibility that he could equal it in the near future.
