The Premier League has named Bruno Fernandes as the 2025/26 winner of the Player of the Season award.

The Manchester United captain has enjoyed a spectacular campaign, powering the club to a third-placed finish and a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Fernandes made history this year by providing 20 assists to his teammates, equalling the record for most assists in a single season, which was set by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and later matched by former Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The Portuguese playmaker is the 27th different footballer to win the award since its inception in 1994/95, which was won by Alan Shearer. The award is given to the player who receives the most combined votes from the public, the 20 club captains and a panel of football experts.

Five players have been named Premier League Player of the Season twice; Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah. Only Ronaldo has won it consecutively, in 2007 and 2008. Juninho is the only to win it with a team that was relegated, doing so with Middlesbrough in 1996/97.

Fernandes is the seventh Manchester United player to win the accolade and the first since Vidic in 2010/11. It is the ninth time a United player has won it, the most of any Premier League club.

The 31-year-old also won the Player of the Year award from the Football Writers’ Association, which is the 17th time a player has picked up both gongs in the same year.
