ESPN NL have laid out all the information required ahead of the Netherlands’ latest round of action in the UEFA Nations League. Oranje secured a place in the quarter-finals in the fifth round of the UEFA Nations League after they beat Hungary 4-0 to decide group 3 of the A-division. The next opponent is Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final group game tonight.
Tijjani Reijnders, Jurriën Timber and Mats Wieffer will have to avoid a yellow card against Bosnia to avoid a suspension in the next round. Xavi Simons is also on alert in this regard but is absent due to an ankle injury.
Opponent-wise, a total of eight countries have qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament. The four group winners are drawn into the first pot and these countries are paired with an opponent from pot two. This is where the four countries that achieved a second-place finish in the group stage are drawn. Portugal, Croatia, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Denmark are the remaining countries.
In this phase of the Nations League, the Dutch team can only meet group winners. This means that there are four potential opponents: Portugal, Spain, Germany or France.
However, there is an exception. Because Germany was already one of the three opponents of the Dutch team in the group phase, a new two-legged match in the quarter-finals is ruled out. This means that Portugal, Spain and France remain and that these three countries can roll out of the hat.
More clarity is set to follow on Friday afternoon. The draw will start at 12:00 (local time) in Nyon, Switzerland and reveal the Dutch team’s opponent for this fixture at the end of March. The semi-final and final will be played in June, of which the country and host cities are still unknown.
