Legendary Italian manager Fabio Capello has big expectations for Inter Milan in the Champions League this season.

The group stage draw will take place this afternoon. UEFA has implemented a series of major changes to the competition’s format.

For instance, all 36 clubs will feature in one table. The first eight will directly qualify for the Round of 16, while those who finish between 9th and 24th will lock horns in a play-off round.

But when it comes to the favorites to lift the trophy, the usual suspects remain the same.

In Capello’s book, reigning European champions Real Madrid are the best-equipped side to defend their throne.

The Italian tactician then identifies Manchester City as their biggest threat, while Inter complete the podium.

He believes Simone Inzaghi’s men have what it takes to go all the way.

“Real Madrid against everyone? On paper, yes, but there are fierce opponents ready to fight. I’m thinking first of all of Guardiola’s Man City,” said the 78-year-old in his interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews.

“I’d put Inter right behind them. The Nerazzurri have the potential to be competitive on all fronts.

“They have a large squad but above all, the right mentality. They proved it in the Istanbul final, and by winning the Scudetto last season. Inter have what it takes to go all the way.

“Then there’s Arsenal, who have shown they can compete with City. They can aim for the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Capello also admitted his surprise to see Juventus up and running already under the guidance of Thiago Motta.

“I didn’t expect Juventus to be so far ahead, with the new players so integrated into the coach’s philosophy. You can already see Thiago Motta’s touch.”
