Forward Joaquin Correa could be headed to the Turkish or Saudi top flights after being completely frozen out at Inter Milan.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

The transfer window has come and gone without Correa leaving Inter.

The Argentine returned to the Nerazzurri at the end of last season following a deeply uninspiring loan spell with Marseille.

And it always seemed clear that Inter would do everything they could to offload Correa.

And considering that the 30-year-old’s contract with the Nerazzurri expires at the end of next June, it would presumably have to be a permanent sale rather than another loan.

It is not as though there was zero interest in giving Correa another chance.

Genoa had been at the centre of links close to the end of the window. Correa had also been offered to Roma.

And there had in fact been some tentative interest all summer.

River Plate are keen on bringing the 29-year-old back to his home country Argentina.

Then, two of Correa’s former clubs sounded out a surprise return in the form of Lazio and Sevilla.

And rumours also linked the out-of-favour Inter forward with Monza and Real Betis.

Then, AEK Athens also pushed to sign Correa this summer.

But despite all this interest, no club made a decisive offer to sign Correa.

The Argentine’s high wages at Inter were certainly a key obstacle for any interested clubs.

Therefore, Correa is still at Inter, after the end of the transfer window.

There have been some reports that Inter could try to terminate Correa’s contract via mutual consent. But this option does not seem very likely.

As such, the former Lazio forward could very well simply stay at Inter and see out his contract.

And reports have suggested that this would not actually be unwelcome from the perspective of Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi.

The coach would be happy to have a little extra depth in attacking areas.

But thus far, Correa has not played a single minute. It is clear that if he does have a role as a backup option for Inter this season, he will be right at the bottom of the pecking order.

Therefore, an exit is still a possibility.

But that would have to be a club in a league where the transfer window is still open.

There has been interest from Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in signing Correa. As there has been from the Saudi Pro League.

And according to the Gazzetta, those could be just the lifelines that Correa needs.
