Former Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville said in a social media post that West Ham let themselves down after suffering Premier League relegation despite a final day win.
The Hammers beat Leeds 3-0 on the final day, but Tottenham’s victory over Everton rendered it meaningless. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finished on 39 points, two behind Spurs and eight adrift of Leeds in 14th.
Nuno has decided to stay at West Ham in pursuit of instant promotion, with a reported £150million to be raised through sales. Summerville is among those who could command a significant fee after an eye-catching finish to the season.
In 2023 he wanted to stay at Leeds and fight for Championship promotion while others left. He excelled under Daniel Farke, but play-off final defeat to Southampton was followed by West Ham triggering a clause just over £25million plus add-ons.
The message thanked supporters for unwavering backing in difficult moments, admitted the pain was sharper because they came so close, and said West Ham are too big to stay down, with the comeback starting now.
Summerville’s attention now turns to the World Cup after a first Netherlands call-up, having missed March through injury. Leeds will not receive any bonus if he features in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The Dutch face Sweden, Japan and Tunisia in the group.
